The Discovery and Geology of Aven Armand

A blacksmith's tip-off in September 1897, a pioneering speleologist, and hundreds of thousands of years of mineral growth — the story behind the Virgin Forest cave.

Aven Armand runs on two clocks. One is geological: limestone laid down on a sea floor around 200 million years ago, a cavity dissolved out of it some 30 million years ago, and stalagmites that began growing about 700,000 years back. The other is human and startlingly short — a blacksmith's tip-off in September 1897, a first descent by rope ladder days later, and a tunnel that opened the chamber to the public in June 1927. This guide follows both, because the thing that makes the cave remarkable is how directly the second clock depends on the first.

How was Aven Armand discovered?

It began with a tip-off. On 18 September 1897, Louis Armand — a blacksmith at Le Rozier who had worked on Édouard-Alfred Martel's team since 1889 — told Martel he had found something: « Hier, en redescendant de la Parade, je suis tombé par hasard sur un maître trou… » Yesterday, coming back down from La Parade, I happened on a master hole. Stones thrown into it fell with a racket worse than anywhere else, which was the detail that mattered, because noise means depth. Martel was thirty-eight and already the most respected speleologist in France; he took it seriously enough to mount an expedition the following day rather than filing it for later.

The party assembled on the causse on 19 September with an inventory Martel recorded as « Mille kilos d'échelles, cordes, téléphone, lit de camp, caisses de luminaires, vêtements, provisions, outils… » — a thousand kilos of ladders, ropes, a telephone, a camp bed, crates of lamps, clothing, provisions and tools. Louis Armand went down the 75-metre shaft first, by rope ladder, ahead of the professionals who had travelled out on his word. What he shouted back up the field telephone is on record: « Une vraie forêt de pierres… Il y a au moins 100 colonnes. La plus haute a bien 25 mètres. » A real forest of stone, at least a hundred columns, the tallest a good 25 metres. He had underestimated the tallest by five.

Who were the three men who first went down?

Armand Viré descended on 20 September as the second man into the cave, and Martel followed; across 20 and 21 September the three produced a complete survey and located a second shaft, a blind drop of a further 87 metres. Martel named the cave on the spot and recorded why: « Comme le gouffre était anonyme, je décidai, séance tenante, qu'il s'appellerait l'Aven Armand » — as the chasm was nameless, I decided there and then that it would be called the Aven Armand. Louis Armand himself was born on 23 August 1854 at Parrache, near Saint-Affrique in the Aveyron. He trained as a locksmith but worked as a blacksmith at Le Rozier, joined Martel's team in 1889 as foreman and stayed twenty years as his faithful second; the operator commemorated the centenary of his death in September 2021.

Édouard-Alfred Martel was born at Pontoise in 1859 and is called « le père de la spéléologie », the father of speleology. Between 1888 and 1893 he explored 230 chasms and caverns around the world, and he worked as speleologist, hydrologist, naturalist, photographer and writer at once — he made the discipline a systematic practice rather than an adventure. Armand Viré, born in Seine-et-Marne in 1869, was the founder of biospeleology, the study of cave-dwelling life, as well as a hydrogeologist, prehistorian and archaeologist. The three men standing on that floor in September 1897 were, between them, a blacksmith, a hydrologist and a biologist — which is roughly the range of expertise the cave has needed ever since.

How did the cave itself form?

The rock came first, and it came from the sea. The limestone of the Causse Méjean formed roughly 200 million years ago on the floor of a warm, shallow sea, built up from the accumulated remains of corals, crustaceans and other marine organisms. Around 100 million years ago it emerged, lifted by the same tectonic forces that raised the Alps and the Pyrenees. Then, about 30 million years ago, the cavity began to form: acidic water dissolving the limestone from within. One caution on the dates — the operator's own pages are not entirely consistent about the age of the rock, one giving 180 million years and another 200 — so treat that figure as approximate rather than settled.

The acid is the interesting part, because it is not exotic. Rainwater picks up a little acidity crossing the atmosphere, but it acquires most of it passing through the soil, where it takes up carbon dioxide. That mildly acidic water penetrates the limestone through fissures and dissolves cavities out of it. Once a cavity has been started it enlarges by successive collapses of its own vault — which is why Aven Armand is one enormous room rather than a network of galleries, and why the floor now sits about 100 metres down beneath a vault 45 metres high. The two shafts, the 75-metre aven and the blind 87-metre drop below the chamber, belong to the same plumbing.

How did the stalagmites grow?

Growth in the chamber is thought to have begun around 700,000 years ago, long after the cavity itself existed. The mechanism is the reverse of the one that dug the cave: water saturated with dissolved calcite from contact with the topsoil of the causse gives some of it back, first at the ceiling before the drop even falls, then on the floor below. What makes Aven Armand's formations distinctive is the distance in between. Drops fall roughly 40 metres from the vault and shatter on impact, throwing their calcite outward, so deposits build in successive stacked reliefs rather than the smooth surfaces you get in caves where water simply runs down the side of a formation.

The rate is documented rather than estimated, and by the best possible witness. Martel measured the formations between 1897 and 1926 and recorded growth of one to two millimetres across those twenty-nine years. On that scale the Grande Stalagmite's 30 metres and its estimated age of 300,000 to 400,000 years stop sounding like round numbers, and its size is attributed to the unusually strong water supply it has had. It is still growing, and a stalactite descends towards it from the vault: the operator estimates another 200,000 years before the two meet and fuse into a column about 50 metres tall. Colour records the process — white for pure, actively fed calcite, ochre and brown for humic acids from the soil, grey for manganese.

How was the cave opened to the public?

Development took a company and thirty years. The Société anonyme de l'Aven Armand was constituted at Millau on 9 July 1926, with Martel himself as president and Édouard Eiffel — Gustave's son — as vice-president. The scheme was a gently sloping tunnel, 208 metres long, driven to emerge inside the great chamber, and the lighting was entrusted to Fernand Jacopozzi, the engineer who had lit the Eiffel Tower. The works were inaugurated on 11 June 1927, with the first tourist visits following on 12 June. For the next thirty-six years, seeing the cave meant walking it: 382 steps down the tunnel, and 382 back up at the end. Louis Armand himself did not live to see the tunnel open.

The rest is a sequence of upgrades. In 1963 the tunnel was widened and the first funicular installed, running on pneumatic tyres — a European first, adopted so vibration and noise would not damage the stalagmites — which cut the descent to a minute and a half and, more importantly, removed the climb out. A new reception building by the architect E. Pinetre followed in 1972. The lighting was overhauled in 1992 and again in 2014, when LEDs and a sound-and-light presentation went in; the buildings were fully renovated in 2022; and the third-generation funicular, the « Aven Express », entered service on 4 April 2026. Close to ten million people have visited since 1927 — a cumulative total across nearly a century, not an annual one.

Why does Aven Armand matter, and how is it protected?

Martel's own assessment has held up. « Aucune grotte connue au monde ne possède rien de semblable », he wrote — no known cave in the world has anything like it. The claim the site makes today is narrower, and better for being so: the Grande Stalagmite is the tallest known in the developed, publicly visitable underground world, not the tallest anywhere, since taller ones stand in caves that are closed to visitors. What is genuinely without parallel is the concentration — more than 400 stalagmites in a single room of roughly 200,000 cubic metres, many of them 15 to 20 metres tall, inside a cavity that has been underground for some 30 million years.

Protection runs through the practical arrangements more than through signage. The funicular's tyres exist to keep vibration away from the formations; the tunnel is closed by doors at both ends to hold the microclimate at about 12°C and 90% humidity; flash photography is barred. Formally, the site is a site classé at the heart of the Parc national des Cévennes and lies within the Causses et Cévennes UNESCO World Heritage property, inscribed in 2011 as a Mediterranean agro-pastoral cultural landscape. That pairing is the point: the grazed limestone plateau overhead and the chamber beneath it are recognised as parts of one thing, because the soil up there is what feeds the calcite down here.
