On 19 September 1897, Louis Armand, a locksmith from the village of Le Rozier, lowered himself into a shaft on the Causse Méjean that had likely been known locally for generations as an unremarkable sinkhole. What he found below convinced him to return immediately.
The following day, Armand came back with Édouard-Alfred Martel, already one of the most respected speleologists in France, and fellow explorer Armand Viré. Their rope-and-ladder descent into total darkness revealed a chamber whose scale surprised even Martel, who had by then explored caves across the country.

How was the cave opened to visitors?
For decades after 1897, visiting Aven Armand meant repeating something close to Armand and Martel's original rope-and-ladder descent — impractical for anything beyond scientific expeditions. The cave was gradually developed for public visits over the following decades.
The construction of a funicular railway, covering the 60-metre descent in under two minutes, transformed the cave from a scientific curiosity into a practical destination for ordinary visitors, and it remains the standard way down on today's guided Jules Verne tour.
